[She says it, and giggles, arching up into him.]

But it is because I like sweets.

[He laughs into her skin.]

I have never noticed such a thing. You never have pudding.

[illuminescent]

You teased me that I ate too many sweetmeats! And cake!

[She's pushing at him a little.]

You most wicked thing!

[But she kisses him, again and again.]

[He kisses her and laughs and wraps his arms around her, keeping her close.]

Ah, I see. That's why you're so sweet.

[illuminescent]

[She is tumbling on top of him, laughing again.]

I do think so!

[She runs her hands over his hair.]

I love you so much. I will forgive you if you did not get me anything.

[curlytop]

[He slides his hands over her back slowly, touching every inch of her he can.]

I did, though. Shall I get it now?

[illuminescent]

[She nods a little, and presses a kiss to his cheek.]

Yes, please.

[And she slides off him, curling into the bed, tugging the covers over her body.]

[He kisses her forehead as he slides from the bed, zipping across the room to his things and back again before the bed's had a chance to cool. In his hands he holds a small wooden box, about half the size of a loaf of bread, inlaid with a colorful mosaic in lapis and mother of pearl. It looks like a jewelry box, but inside, separated into compartments, are an assortment of sweets from Tashbaan, wrapped in bits of waxed paper.]

What were you going to do with more jewels, anyway?

[illuminescent]

Oh-

[She takes the box, which is beautiful alone. Lucy’s fingers gently curve over the candy, and she nods a little.]

This is better. Thank you, my love.

[She sets it down and reaches for him. Her hands are gentle against his chest.]

The best gift is sleeping next to you.

[curlytop]

[He settles himself against her again, arms around her, leaning in for a kiss.]

Aye. I missed it while I was away. I was jealous of your maids.

[illuminescent]

My maids did not sleep here.

I thought I might wake them if I was weeping.

[She pulls his hand to her heart.]

I wished a thousand curses on Edmund. That he would be eaten by sand lice.

[curlytop]

No, but they're only a room away. Much closer than I was.

[He strokes his thumb over her collar bone.]

Need I remind you that you acquiesced?

[illuminescent]

Do you blame me?

[She looks at him, then. Maybe he does. It was her decision. She let him go, where she could have thrown a fuss.]

[curlytop]

No, of course not.

[He kisses her, lazy and sweet.]

I only meant, you shouldn't be so hard on your brother.

[illuminescent]

Have you changed allegiances, then? Edmund would be pleased to know it.

[She kisses him anyway. Don't be mean, Lu.]

[curlytop]

[George laughs into the kiss.]

That depends? How is King Edmund at kissing?

[illuminescent]

I am told he is a generous enough lover.

[She says it with a face that suggests she would really prefer not having known that fact, but here we are.]

[curlytop]

I...am not going to ask how you know that.

Anyway, you're much prettier.

[He kisses her throat, just under her jaw to soothe away that sour expression.]

[illuminescent]

Of course I am.

[Her sour expression does go. She settles her head against his chest.]

Thank you for the sweets, my love.

[curlytop]

[He rests his cheek on her hair.]

You're welcome, mo chridhe. Honestly, if I'd brought back everything that made me think of you, I'd have all of Calormen with me.

[illuminescent]

Even the terrible things?

[She smiles just a little, but she keeps him close to her her.]

If you sleep now, perhaps I can manage through the night.

[curlytop]

Everything I see reminds me of you, Lucy. The terrible things make me think of how not like you they are.

[He tugs the blankets more closely around them.]

You'll sleep as well?

[illuminescent]

I think I may manage it now.

[She presses herself against him, and finally does, in fact, manage to sleep.

And the days go by.

There is nothing really too terrible; they pass slowly, and the summer begins to fade, and Lucy gets sick. It's an illness that strikes her rather randomly, leaving her vomiting at times and well at other, and making her a bit more tired and - dare it be said - irritable than usual.

George has to get up every day and leave Lucy's room before the maids arrive, and one morning, while Lucy is puking her guts out, a pair of them pass George. If I didn't know better, I would say her majesty is pregnant, giving George a little nod as they leave her apartments.

Lucy herself is on the bed, a damp cloth over her eyes.]

George?

[curlytop]

[George has been worried about Lucy since she started showing signs of illness, but when he hears the maids whispering, his worries take a new bent.

He hurries into Lucy's room, moving to perch on the edge of her bed.]

Lucy. How...how are you feeling?

[He's not sure how to broach the subject he only just started considering.]

[illuminescent]

[Her damp cloth is still there, and her breathing is just a little shallow.]

It happened again.

[She reaches her hand out, but she can't see anything, since her eyes are covered.]

Susan has told me I do not have to go to court if I feel poorly, but I have missed too much.
